I'm here to discuss or introduce you to the (I)GCSE subjects you will encounter during your time at school. (this applies to students who study the English curriculum).

The minimum subjects you are permitted to take: 5 subjects

The maximum subjects you are permitted to take: 16 (very unlikely)

The average subjects students took in 2016 was 9.

I am currently taking 10 subjects and I can tell you that it is not a bad choice because that is the standard. It might seem like a lot of work to do, but actually it's not bad at all once you get the hang of it. That is probably why I chose to take 2 course works.

The subjects I am currently taking are: Mathematics, English Literature, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Mandarin, Art and Design & Technology.

Let me first talk about the choices I had and why I didn't choose to take them.

History: I have to admit I really enjoyed studying History at school. I studied World War I last year and it impressed me a lot. It seemed like this was going to be one of the subjects I was going to choose. The real reason why I didn't take it was the amount of essays you were required to write.

Latin: I saw no point of studying the language. It was my first year learning it and it was difficult.

Computer Science: Computer science is a very useful subject. You should take it if you like it because it will get you very far as technology takes over the world. I didn't take it due to difficulty studying new languages (C++ etc.).

Theology and Philosophy (T&P): A very good subject for those who enjoy studying about religions, laws, traditions and morals. I wasn't particularly interested in this.

The subjects I took:

Mathematics, English(x2), Physics, Chemistry, Biology (you can choose to take 2 Sciences): These are all compulsory subjects so I couldn't really choose what to do and what not.

Mandarin: As Mandarin language becomes more popular across the globe, I felt like I needed to study the language for future communications.

Geography: A subjects where a lot of the content is memorised. I enjoy learning about the world and how it functions so this would be a very useful subject for me.

Art: Art is a coursework meaning that you are required to produce work continuously that gets graded at the end of the two year course. I enjoy painting and creating unique artwork.

Design and Technology: I have to say that this subject is my most favorite one. I enjoy making new designs or even contraptions. You get to express your ideas and learn to disrupt methods to improve the world. Another subject that is useful for your future. And by the way, this is also a coursework.

So, it the end, it should not be anyone that decides which subject you're taking because you are going to be with the subject for two years. Follow your heart and seek consultant if required.
